You don’t have to be an accomplished “advanced” diver to take the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course – it’s designed to advance your diving skills, so you can start right after earning your PADI Open Water Diver certification. The course helps build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different Adventure Dives. You try out different specialties while gaining experience under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. You log dives and develop capabilities as you find new ways to have fun scuba diving. You’ll plan your learning path with your instructor by choosing from a long list of Adventure Dives. There are two required dives – Deep and Underwater Navigation – and you choose the other three, for a total of five dives.
During the Deep Adventure Dive, you learn how to plan dives to deal with the challenges of deeper scuba diving. The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive refines your compass navigation skills and helps you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time.
The other knowledge and skills you get vary with your interest and the adventures you have – photography, buoyancy control, fish identification, exploring wrecks and many more.
Advanced Open Water divers oose may choose from a wide variety of Adventure dives including:
• Search and Recovery
• Enriched Air (nitrox)
• Digital Underwater Photography
• Peak Performance Buoyancy
Your adventure continues when you access the PADI eLearning curriculum for the Adventure or Advanced dives you are looking for. Remember, you are required to complete the performance requirements for the Deep and Navigation training dives. From there you can choose any 3 Adventure dives from the list above to complete your Advanced Open Water certification. Now it's time to complete the dive theory training specific to your choices. This can be accomplished independently at your convenience online, or you may choose to work directly with one of our PADI Instructors in a classroom setting. It's your choice!! Then you will be ready to apply that new-found knowledge to actual open water training dives in deeper water than you experienced in your Open Water Diver course.
Open Water Training
The Adventure Deep dive will be deeper than 60ft/20m, the Advanced and Adventure Deep dives are conducted at Windy Point Park on Lake Travis, just north of Austin, TX. Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, you will conduct the 5 training dives required for AOW certification. We enjoy camping on-site on the shores of Lake Travis to make this a truly fun and exciting experience! For those who prefer not to "rough it", there are many hotels within 15-20 minutes of the dive site.
Unless otherwise planned, you should arrive at Windy Point Park before noon on Saturday. We will conduct 3 training dives throughout the day and complete the final 2 dives early Sunday morning. Generally, we are heading back home between 12-2pm Sunday afternoon. Note - Adventure Scuba does not provide transportation or accommodations. However, many divers get together and carpool and/or share expenses.
Beyond using basic scuba equipment, you’ll need a compass and dive knife or dive tool. You’ll also use specialized gear depending on the Adventure Dives you choose. For example, you’d use a dive light for the Night Diver Adventure Dive or an underwater camera during the Digital Underwater Photography Adventure Dive. Your PADI Instructor will explain the equipment that you need and may suggest additional gear, such as a dive computer for multilevel/computer diving or lift bag for search and recovery diving.
You may choose to purchase the Essential Equipment package we have put together for any of the Adventure or Advanced Open Water training dives. Visit Adventure Scuba & Snorkeling Center to learn more about the gear you will need to start your adventures during the Advanced Open Water Diver course.
